Q&A Session with Lisa Kelly

admin Ice Road Truckers, Lisa Kelly, The Truckers

Q&A Session with Lisa Kelly

We asked Ice Road Trucker some of your Questions, here are the Top 20! IRT:  How long have you been driving trucks? Lisa Kelly: About five or six years. IRT:  How did you get started in the industry? Lisa Kelly: I got my first start by driving a school bus and they helped me with my CDL. Then I applied at Carlile and they helped me to where I am now. IRT:  What is your favorite brand and model of truck? Lisa Kelly: Kenworth! Of course! IRT:  What is your favorite load to haul? Lisa Kelly: I like loads that make me think and challenge me. Doesn’t matter what. IRT:  What is your favorite food on the road? Lisa Kelly:    I LOVE trail mix but it goes right to my hips…. hahaha…. so I stick with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Oh and M & M’s are essential. IRT:  What is your favorite beverage on the road? Lisa Kelly:    Water, water water. IRT:  What music do you listen to when driving? Lisa Kelly: I love a variety of music but I’m most always in the mood for something upbeat make-you-clap-your-hands. IRT:  What was your most challenging run so far? Lisa Kelly: I think the most challenging thing I’ve ever done is a tie between the 80 foot long pipe, the 17 high I did last week, or the fourteen wide I did when I first started trucking. IRT:  What trade magazines / websites do your read / visit most? Lisa Kelly: I love motocross mags, and I am addicted to the usual myspace and facebook.  But that’s all I really have time for. IRT:  What can you be found doing when you have downtime? Lisa Kelly: Playing with my new mini horse, riding dirtbikes or the more boring stuff like cleaning the house and just hanging out. IRT:  What is your most memorable moment as a driver? Lisa Kelly: Mmmm, I think it would have to be the first time I went up the Dalton hwy.  It was a huge accomplishment that I finally got up there and survived. IRT:  What is the biggest goal you would like to accomplish as a driver? Lisa Kelly: Mostly to have a good reputation in being safe and a good driver.  I don’t have to be the best but I strive to do my best in whatever I choose to pursue. IRT:  What tools / parts do you carry with you to keep your rig rolling? Lisa Kelly: I have so many tools it would be hard to name them.  Just the basics such as wrenches and screwdrivers.  But in addition, I carry spare parts, torch, hammer, chains, and random fittings and hoses. IRT:  In your opinion what is the biggest obstacle truck drivers face today? Lisa Kelly: In my opinion it would be other drivers.  Everything else is fairly predictable but you never can tell what another person is going to do.  Animals are random too but I’m not as worried about killing an animal. IRT:  What is the most challenging part of being a woman in the trucking industry? Lisa Kelly: The challenging part of being a woman is not having the strength and weight as a man, and the people who say, “you can’t”. IRT:  What one thing would you change with the industry if you could? Lisa Kelly: The single thing that I would change about the industry would be more of a schedule.  We never know when we are going to be trucking and for how long.  It’s like living on standby, and definatly more home time. IRT:  What advice would you give new drivers? Lisa Kelly: Always be willing to learn, never think you know it all. You can always learn something from someone. IRT:  Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Lisa Kelly: I’m not sure.  Right now I’m just taking life as it comes.  I would like to have a house of my own and still married to my sweet husband with lots of animals.  But other than that I’m open to new experiences and fun adventures.  Bring it on!! IRT:  Where do you see the trucking industry in 10 years? Lisa Kelly: I never really thought about this one.  I just kinda figured it would be the same.  Maybe I don’t understand the question. IRT:  Whats next for Lisa Kelly? Lisa Kelly: Like I said, living life as it comes.  Hopefully I’ll be able to do another season becuase it was very fun to do.  Then after that we’ll see what kind of doors are opened. IRT:  Did we forget anything?  If you have anything to add here is the place! Lisa Kelly: I think you got it all. Thank you. That was a fun interview and not the same usual questions. You can see Lisa at this Years 2013 Truckfest Events and also on This Years Ice Road Truckers on History later in the year!
